Great insights Anthony! Focusing too much on the outcome gets in the way of a lot of things.
I had similar experiences while training in Arnis in my 20s and early 30s.
My wake up call about focus and presence was delivered by an Aikido master with 25 years experience - while we were sparring. I learned that lesson. Over. And Over. And over again.
I loved how you tied in the insight from your first essay here too. Both of our essays this week revolved around the idea of slowing down and enjoying the process. Billy Oppenheimer always writes that Ryan Holiday told him, "the work is the win," and that's something I stand by.
Love the focus of this series. These lines hit close to heart for me:
“It’s not a bad thing that I’m aggressively-passionate in certain situations and in relationships.
It’s just not a good thing when I use it improperly and uncontrollably. I need to channel my aggression in the ring, the same way I need to channel my driven-mentality in life.”
Learning control, even for our good traits, is an essential skill to master in relationships and business. Through slowing down, we give ourselves an opportunity to be present.
Keep up the great writing Anthony, excited to see what’s in store for Week 5!
Thank you for the encouragement. I was just talking to my dad yesterday about how enamored I am by series - in films, in books, in essays, in everything.
Wisdom at its finest “As my dad said, “You can never hurt the other person by going slower, but you can blow it up by going too fast."
Great read - so many perspectives to heed. :)
Thank you James.
It's a lesson I will forever be learning.... and I'm grateful for that.
Patience, patience, patience.

Wow. Such a lesson can come in many forms of combat.
I appreciate you sharing Bud. It means a lot coming from you.
“It's not just about slowing down. It's about being present”
Love this. An old basketball coach once told me, “be quick, but don’t rush”.
I think of that advice and apply it often.
That’s the truth!!
I’ve found over the years that I can know the concept of slowing down and all of the benefits, yet still default to a desire for fast.
I totally agree.
To your second point, I also completely understand. It’s a constant work in progress for me too.
Amigo muy bien hecho!

Great job Anthony!!
Amen to that! Thank you Baxter.
I appreciate you seeing the connection in my essays. I'm grateful to be able to make an essay series around this pivotal life lesson of mine.
Let's keep it going!
Let's go! This train doesn't stop. WOP for infinity.
